Welcome to the Homepage of the Hurricane Debate Institute of the University of Miami. As you explore each section of the HDI site, be sure to click our embedded links for further details. This year, the HDI will run from June 7-19, 2009.

What could be better than two (2) weeks at THE U!

The University of Miami Debate Team invites middle and high school students of all experience levels to participate in the 16th Hurricane Debate Institute offering instruction and practice in:

LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATE (LD)
PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE (PFD)
TEAM POLICY DEBATE (CX)
(NEW) SPEECH AND ARGUMENT SKILLS CAMP

We believe that focusing on skills development is the quickest path to competitive success, especially for those debaters who don't have full-time coaching.

The institute will provide intensive one-on-one debate teaching with a focus on developing skills through guided practice. Areas covered will include: analysis of 2009 - 2010 debate resolutions, argumentation strategy, identifying issues, building of cases and briefs, flowing, debate strategy, debating philosophical concepts, and effective cross examination and presentation skills. The HDI features individualized instruction appropriate for all experience levels. Rising middle school and high school students are invited.

(NEW) SPEECH AND ARGUMENT SKILLS CAMP: Students in this camp will explore and develop their thinking and speaking skills through games and exercises involving public speaking (impromptu and prepared), group problem-solving and discussion, all the formal styles of debate (Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, and C-X) as well as parliamentary debate and other communication based exercises. Students will learn to cope with speaking anxieties, to organize and support their ideas, to critically evaluate and respond appropriately to the ideas of others, and to deliver effective messages. While the format and content will not directly prepare students to participate in competitive debate or forensics, it may serve as a precursor to such participation. The primary goal of the Speech and Argument Skills Camp will be to empower students through public expression to become better thinkers, speakers, writers, listeners, and leaders. Appropriate for students of all ages, but especially for grades 5-8. The camp will be personally taught by Professor David Steinberg.
